Winter 2024 Scholars: Bios

  • My name is San Zai Agdeppa and I am extremely honored and grateful to have been selected as the first Jean Griswold Foundation Scholar in Hawai’i. I have been working as a caregiver for about four years now and it has been nothing but great and fulfilling— being able to care, help, and be part of other people’s lives especially in challenging and life changing circumstances. I have known from the very beginning that caregiving is not just a job, but a passionate journey where I can continue to keep growing by supporting and nurturing others. I find extreme joy in knowing that I am a source of emotional and physical support to someone that makes a difference in the lives of those I care for. I am in the process of furthering my education and knowledge in caregiving and this scholarship is and will be a huge help in ensuring that I can help and care for more people with different needs and circumstances.

  • Thank you to the Jean Griswold Foundation for choosing me as a scholarship recipient for 2025. I have been in healthcare since 1999 and am currently starting my 3rd semester in nursing school. I have always found it in my nature to want to help others either by teaching, doing, volunteering, and nurturing others since I was a little girl. My greatest supporters are my family and close friends. My husband of 30 years, our 3 children and our 3 grandchildren cheer me on when I am exhausted.  My extended family has supported me through this journey with words of encouragement. The friends I have made in nursing school are wonderful supporters of each other, making us a team strong enough to be the best nurses yet. The many team members of Griswold in Broomfield, CO have made it possible for me to work and go to school at the same time. If you want it bad enough, it’s worth reaching for the stars!

  • My name is Manuel Chevez, and I was born in Nicaragua. I've been living in Maryland for the past two years. I am thrilled to have been selected for the Jean Griswold Foundation Scholarship. My family and I see this as the start of a journey that will equip me with the skills needed for my professional and prosperous future. My healthcare career began with six years of work at Hospital San Miguel Arcangel in Panama. I also studied five years of Agriculture at Ingeniero in Nicaragua. My passion for medicine was ignited during my childhood when I experienced my mother’s battle with cancer. This scholarship will provide me with the opportunity to further my education, enabling me to work with patients facing various challenges and ultimately support my family. I have many aspirations, not only in nursing and caregiving but also in roles within the Griswold office alongside Mirza Donegan. Thanks to the Jean Griswold Foundation, my dreams can become a reality, allowing me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients who find comfort and hope in our care. I am committed to honoring the trust placed in me by giving my all. Again, thank you for providing the opportunity to do what I love at Griswold Care.

  • I am Anthonia Eke and I work as a caregiver with Griswold homecare of west Houston, TX. Compassionate caregiver with over 8 years of experience engaging seniors and other persons with need at home to improve activity level and wellness. My dream of contributing positively to the society will be achieved.

  • Hi, my name is Kimberly Hurley and I’m currently in my last year of nursing school at Lawrence Memorial/Regis College in Medford, MA. My journey in healthcare began as a mental health counselor, where I had the opportunity to work on both a psychiatric and eating disorder unit. My reason to become a nurse has significantly strengthened since my father was diagnosed with stage 3 pancreatic cancer. This experience has taught me that when caring for each patient it’s so important to be an advocate and really listen to your patient. I want to make an impact in healthcare by being there for so many others in the same way I’ve been there for my father.

  • - Hello everyone! My name is Joanna Jones, and I am currently enrolled in the Accelerated Bachelor of Nursing program at SUNY Downstate College of Health Sciences. As a child of immigrant parents, I have naturally taken on caregiving roles since I was young—from helping my mother navigate the challenges of a foreign world to taking care of my brother, niece, and nephews. This innate tendency to care for others has only grown stronger as I’ve gotten older. I earned my first bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Bard College. Over the years, I’ve worked in refugee services in Egypt and Switzerland, addressing the psycho-social impact of forced migration. It was through these experiences that I discovered my true calling: to provide holistic mental health care through the nursing profession. I have always valued and advocated for accessible healthcare, especially in the area of mental health, because, as an Afro-Caribbean woman, I have witnessed many people—including myself—struggle to receive the help they need. I chose an accelerated program because I am not only determined but also inspired by the vast and complex capabilities of nurses as healthcare professionals, and I am eager to make a meaningful impact in that role. In the future, I hope to earn my Master’s as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and open a non-profit organization to serve communities that need care the most. I am immensely grateful to the Jean Griswold Foundation for providing me with the opportunity to continue my journey without the added stress of worrying about how to pay for the next semester of my accelerated nursing program.

  • My name is Taliya Jones, and I am a third-year biology pre-med student at Xavier University of Louisiana. I am currently on the path to becoming a clinical medical assistant as part of my journey toward a career in medicine. Growing up in Chicago, IL, I witnessed the impact of healthcare disparities, which inspired my passion for improving access to quality care in underserved communities. This scholarship is helping me take meaningful steps toward achieving my educational and professional goals, providing me with the support I need to turn my aspirations into reality. With every step of this journey, I am committed to becoming a compassionate and impactful healthcare provider.

  • My name is Jake Lindsey, and I am very grateful to be a Jean Griswold Foundation Scholarship recipient. I graduated from EMT-B school at Hinds Community College in Fall 2024. I am now attending Advanced EMT school at Advanced Rescue Education Solutions in Biloxi, MS. My goal is to complete Paramedic school and then bridge to RN. My eventual goal is to work my way up to be a Nurse Practitioner. I was in the U.S. Army for a few years then became a science teacher. I have always had the dream of becoming a Medic here at home and eventually a Nurse. The journey here has been challenging but has been worth every step. I finally decided to attend EMT school in the Summer of 2024. I was accepted to the class and received a phone call. I found out my mother had lung cancer and had to have a tumor removed. I moved to Pigeon Forge to take care of her while she recovered. I was unable to attend school that summer. But the surgery went great, and I was able to come home and attend the Fall class. I look forward to being able to serve my community.

  • My name is Cynthia Lira. I am a care provider for Griswold, and I have had the privilege of caring for elderly individuals who require assistance with daily tasks. This role has been incredibly rewarding for me. With nearly two years of experience at this company, overall, I have had 8 years. I have developed a deep appreciation for the importance of compassionate care. My philosophy is that age is merely a number, and that individuals of all ages can continue to grow, succeed, and thrive. Furthermore, I am grateful to have received a scholarship that enabled me to pursue my education as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

  • I am honored to be a recipient of the Griswold Foundation Scholarship. My name is Christina Lucas, and I live in Pocono Lake, PA. From an early age, I was drawn to helping others, starting as a volunteer at my church’s bingo hall, where I worked the concession stand and interacted with patrons. This experience sparked my passion for service and making a difference in people’s lives. Thanks to the support of the Jean Griswold Foundation, I am now taking the next step in my healthcare journey by pursuing certification as a Nursing Assistant (CNA). I plan to continue my education in Memory Care, therapeutic recreation, and Holistic care, to deepen my impact in this field.

  • I started my medical field journey in a medical billing office. I quickly realized the office setting was not for me and I wanted to switch to a hands on field. I became a CNA and I have been doing that since 2017 in the homecare and hospice field. I absolutely loved it. After my kids were in school I decided I was ready to take the plunge and start nursing school. I graduate in March and it has been the most eye opening experience.  I am so excited to continue to grow my career and be the best nurse I can be!

  • My name is Emily Porter, and I am a Senior at Clifton-Clyde High School. I have worked at the Nicol Home in Glasco, Kansas for almost three years now, but I started working there as a CNA in July of 2023. When I started working as a CNA, I quickly realized that I wanted to stay in the healthcare field for my future career. I have a deep passion for caring for others, which I plan to do in the future as a registered nurse. I want to make a positive difference and provide the best quality of care to others as a nurse. I plan to attend Fort Hays North Central Technical College in Beloit, Kansas in the fall of 2025 to pursue an associate’s degree in nursing. Following my graduation from college, I would like to work as a labor and delivery nurse or a geriatric nurse.

  • My name is Aravind Sharma and I am extremely excited to be selected as a Winter 2024 Jean Griswold Scholar! Caregiving has played a major role in my life as I have held volunteer and paid positions at multiple organizations, including the Villas at Stanford Ranch, Sunrise, and Griswold Home Care since 2017 (7 years). Having observed my uncle give up his dreams of pursuing a PhD to become a full-time caregiver for my grandmother (diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis) motivated me to make caregiving a central part of my healthcare career.  My undergraduate research interests in understanding how music impacts the cognitive decline of patients with Alzheimer’s disease coincided with my work experience as a caregiver, allowing me to discover how various tenets of healthcare are inexorably connected. I am pursuing the CAA profession (Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant) as I am extremely passionate about the science and art of administering anesthesia given my extensive experience shadowing and working in the operating room. The Jean Griswold Scholarship will not only aid me in financing my schooling but will also cement my passion to continue being part of the care industry well into the future.

  • My name is Elizabeth Shea. I am currently attending Minneapolis College for an Associate of Science in the Nursing Program, on track to be an RN. My first career was in acting and bartending, but with the pandemic came some drastic life changes. I decided to go back to school but had no idea what to pursue. Upon reading the autobiography of rape victim Chantel Miller, something clicked, I was meant to be a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. I decided to put my caregiving skills to the best use I could think of, serving a deeply vulnerable population with respect and compassion. Coming to Griswold was the best decision I could have made for my education. The company has been incredible about working with my schedule as it changes from semester to semester, including working around clinical hours, lab hours, and exam schedule. They have paired me with incredible clients. I have been witness to some of their most powerful life events. Griswold has helped me to know that I am in the right field, and on the right track. I am blown away at the generosity of the company in granting these scholarships and truly honored to be a recipient.

  • Hi! My name is Jonnelle Spann. I am very honored and grateful to be chosen for the Jean Griswold Scholarship. I’ve been working as a caregiver all over Montgomery County Maryland for about six years. While also attending college to pursue Nursing. Caregiving is something that comes very naturally to me, since I was a young child. I genuinely enjoy being able to help and make a difference in people's lives. I’m currently attending Montgomery College with a goal to pursue my dreams of becoming a nurse practitioner. As a caregiver I've had the opportunity to see all aspects of the job, and I truly believe I can make an even bigger impact on my community as a NP. This scholarship will help tremendously on my journey through college/nursing school and has motivated me to continue to work hard.

  • My name is Psykhe and I am from Barbados. Caregiving has always been the foundation of my life. Growing up, I witnessed close family members, including my father, nephew, cousins, and unless, struggle with hemophilia. Watching their intense pain and the challenges caused by a lack of nursing support deeply inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. My goal is to dedicate my career to serving rural and underserved communities. I firmly believe that no one should have to endure pain or illness without access to adequate care and support. I am sincerely grateful for this scholarship, which allows me to expand my efforts to improve the lives of others.

  • My name is Katelyn Thoeny and I am currently in nursing school at Denver College of Nursing. Growing up I did not know that I wanted to be a nurse, until one of my best friends had to go through chemo at a very young age. I went to most of her chemo appointments with her and was in awe by the amazing work that the nurses did. The nurses were the main care takers, motivators, change agents, advocates, and caregivers throughout my friend’s experience. After that I was sold on being a nurse. I am blessed enough to have received this scholarship in order to fulfill my dream of being a nurse. With this scholarship I will be able to further my education without the stress of paying for the upcoming quarter. I am so thankful for the Jean Griswold Foundation and the opportunities it will present me moving forward in my education. This is so special to me and I could not be more thankful to have been chosen for this honor.

  • Hi- I’m La’Wonda and I'm 44 years old. I started a journey over 20 years ago to care for people. Since I was a kid I always loved to take care of kids as a kid and everyone around me. Now that I've taken classes and worked as a caregiver I'm more excited and very interested in caring for my loved ones and others who need hands-on care. My plan is to go back to school and get more training so I can become a Hospice Nurse. I wanna build my own facility so I can take care of my family and other families who need the love and care alone with the companionship I offer.

  • My name is Michelle Thornton and since 2021 I have been a caregiver for Griswold home health agency located in the Blue Bell, Pa area. Currently I am pursuing my journey in the health care field. I am proud to say that being a dedicated caregiver throughout society, I have deeply loved being a caregiver carrying out the duties with 1 on 1 intervention and with couples with their personal care. I am also currently in team leader position at my church, supervising with the facility monitors team on the church campus. Through my years of working as a caregiving, I have learned about individuals and myself that I am a passionate and patient person when it comes down to helping others/clients with their needs. This has empowered me to want to do more with myself in the caregiving field. Families are impacted by the service they receive when they have a dependable and trustworthy caregiver that treats them good and respects their values.  I am grateful to be able to have the drive that I must meet my clients’ needs. This passion for helping others led me to enter a career in the nursing field, where I will give them and love, comfort, healing and care to all individuals that I will encounter in nursing. Knowing that I am committed has demonstrated how important it is to put my great clients’ needs above my own, they come first. This journey in nursing school will be exciting and encouraging to learn new things in the health field, so that the patients can and will see the matter in life. I would like to thank Jean Griswold Foundation for the Scholarship; I can further my education in being more marketable by receiving this scholarship. My ideal hope is to make more valid changes in the lives of others. I will provide the highest quality of care to everyone that comes across my path. When I complete this session of nursing, my plans will do my best and go higher in my education by becoming an LPN. Thanks to Jean Griswold Foundation for this scholarship, now I can move forward in my nursing career. I am so ever grateful.

Summer 2024 Scholars: Bios

  • My name is Carol Cuffee. I'm a nursing student at the University of the District of Columbia, Community College. I was born and raised I Washington, DC. I have always dreamed of becoming a Registered Nurse, it has always been my passion. I have had a lot of adversities in my life, and I am so grateful and excited about my journey in nursing school. I worked in the medical field for over twenty years, caretaking from pediatrics to adults. I truly love helping others. In 2019 my mom passed and then in 2020 during the heaviest time of the COVID-19 pandemic my husband passed away from cancer. My husband passed alone because they were strict no visitor policies. They were both sick at the same time and it was very hard on me taking care of both and still trying to work to help others in the hospital, but I did it. I noticed firsthand the shortage of nurses and caretakers in the hospitals and disparities in our communities. After their passing, I just felt lost. I felt alone, I felt stuck, and I decided to open the computer and follow my dream. No matter what you go through, no matter how old you are, you can still persevere to follow your dreams.  With the help of the Jean Griswold caretaking scholarship, I can continue to persevere with my dreams and goals to becoming a registered nurse. My plan is to take my degree and become a community health nurse or a home health nurse to give back to my community to help others with their medical care and personal needs.

  • My name is Valerie Gerrior, I started at Tulsa Community College and graduated last year from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor's in biology with a focus in Pre-Med, minoring in Microbiology. I took this year off from school to further my work experience and save to go to a CAA program. I have been an employee with Griswold for almost a year, working as a Caregiver and Care Coordinator although I started my journey in public health services as a lifeguard at 15 and have continued to further my skills as a Phlebotomist, Med/Surg Rehab Tech and through various volunteering opportunities. I am beyond grateful to have been chosen for this amazing scholarship opportunity and can’t wait to use it to further my education and continue serving my community.

  • Greetings, everyone! My name is Geneene Green, and I am extremely grateful to have been selected as a Summer 2024 Jean Griswold Foundation Scholar! A native and lifelong resident of the District of Columbia, I have been blessed to spend the last 16+ years of my life serving low- to moderate-income seniors (and their families) in the very community I grew up in. My love for the elderly is certainly due in no small part to the strong and enduring relationships I maintained with my maternal grandmother, Mary, and my longtime nanny, Inez, who I also lovingly called Grandma. While it took me some time to truly understand and walk into my purpose, I wouldn’t trade anything for my journey, as it has been one of both trials and triumphs. This scholarship is a tremendous blessing that will enable me to continue my studies toward a nursing degree from the University of the District of Columbia Community College. I am honored to be a part of such a talented and dedicated group of scholars who share my commitment to contribute to the greater good by making a profoundly positive impact on the public’s health—each in our own right.

  • My name is Julia Harmon, and I am honored to be the recipient of the Griswold Foundation scholarship. My journey to becoming a nurse has been deeply personal and fulfilling. Ever since I was young, I have been passionate about helping others and positively impacting people's lives. This passion led me to pursue a career in nursing, where I hope to bring comfort, care, and healing to those in need. I have demonstrated a solid commitment to learning and growing as a future nurse throughout my academic journey.

I have always been fascinated by the human body and the intricate ways in which it functions, and I am eager to apply this knowledge to provide compassionate and holistic care to my future patients. This scholarship is a great honor and a tremendous help in my education and nursing career. My ultimate hope as a nurse is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I aspire to work in a challenging and dynamic environment where I can continue to learn and grow while providing the highest quality of care to my patients. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to pursue my passion for nursing, and I am determined to make the most of it. Thank you for believing in me and for granting me this scholarship.

  • In 2016 we moved my grandfather in with us after he was diagnosed with vascular dementia with Lewey bodies. Over the next 6 years I helped my mother care for him. I would meet many new faces of his medical team while we allowed him to age in place at our home. One of his caregivers had just graduated from our local high school with her certified clinical medical assistant degree. I was intrigued with this certification. I asked her more about it and then I too was able to complete it my junior and senior year in high school. During my junior and senior year, I also worked at the local nursing home while also helping my mom with my grandfather. During this time, I realized I wanted to pursue my education and some type of medical field. I discovered a program where I would get my bachelor's in nursing and then pursue my master's in public health to focus on research. Caring for my grandfather at my home allowed me to meet many professionals in the healthcare world. Caregiving for my grandfather gave me a positive outlook on caring for the elderly. I learned about dementia and was able to apply it while I worked at the nursing home and now the hospital where I am currently employed.

  • Since 2010, I have worked in the healthcare and education related sectors. I am a Certified Nursing Assistant and Geriatric Nursing Assistant in Maryland. I work at John Hopkins Medicine Suburban Hospital as a Patient Care Technician I. I am also a student at the University of the District of Columbia. I just completed the first semester of nursing school while working full time, and while this experience has been very intense, I have been able to take what I am learning in the classroom and apply it to the real world.

One thing that remains consistent is this idea of patient care. The work caregivers do comes out of love, it has too. It is love that makes me attentive to my patient, it is love that pushes me to read their chart and ask questions so I know their needs, it is love that guides our conversation when I speak with them and their family, it is love that pushes me to build a relationship with them, it is love when we breathe together during anxious times.

I pray every day that I continue to do well in school and eventually become a registered nurse. I pray for wisdom so that I can make the right decision in the work that I do. I pray that I make a positive impact on the people I serve and those I work with. I pray that my patients get well.

For those six years, I've been able to learn about different backgrounds and cultures. It's truly been a blessing. But I've always wanted to do more for those who really need it. This scholarship gives me the opportunity to do that. I know that my presence in this country is not in vain because I will put all my knowledge into the service of the community, I am thankful to the organization for giving me the opportunity to do what I love. I'm thankful to my company Griswold homecare for believing in me.

  • Hello, my name is Donisha Newsome. I am currently a Caregiver/CNA, I have been caregiving going on 5 years now. I have always been drawn to the field of nursing because of my deep-seated desire to care for others with the same tenderness and compassion I would offer my own grandma. From a young age, I found joy in comforting those around me, whether it was bandaging scraped knees or simply listening to their concerns. As I grew older, my admiration for nurses only grew stronger as I witnessed firsthand the impact they have on patients' lives. Now, pursuing my dream of becoming a nurse feels like a natural progression of my lifelong passion for caregiving. I am committed to not only acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills but also to embodying the empathy and patience that define a great nurse. My goal is not just to provide medical care, but to create a warm and supportive environment where patients feel safe and cared for, just like I would want for my own grandma. Every step of my journey, from volunteering in healthcare settings to pursuing my nursing education, is fueled by this heartfelt dedication. I am eager to contribute positively to the lives of others, one caring interaction at a time, and I look forward to the day when I can make a real difference as a nurse, honoring the values instilled in me by the love and compassion for my grandma.

  • My name is Fran, I was born in Brazil and moved to Boston with my family in 1998. Growing up attending ESL schools made me feel I was always one step behind, leading me to stop pursuing a nursing degree over 10 years ago. I have worked as a Medical Assistant for 10 years while I improve my English language skills and gained the confidence to go back to school. I have always enjoyed being a caregiver and I have no doubt that nursing is my calling.

I am currently a student at Lawrence Memorial/Regis College School of Nursing, and I will be graduating in May of 2025. I have dedicated myself to expand my knowledge and I am proud to be an honors student. I am excited to finally take my education further and learn new skills so I can provide better care to those in need.

The financial assistance that Jean Griswold Foundation has provided me has helped me remain focused in my studies, and less worried about the funds to cover my school expenses. This scholarship has helped me get one step closer to achieving my dream of being a nurse and I cannot express my gratitude. Thank you again for the amazing work and opportunity you have given each one of us, as we strive to enhance our education to provide excellent care for those in need.

  • My name is Heidi Pickford, I am a nurturer by nature, an animal lover (with two dogs and a cat), a business owner, and a student. I am in my last year of the Master's Occupational Therapy program at Wayne State University. Becoming an Occupational Therapist will allow me to use my creativity to enhance the quality of life for others, a calling I discovered through a high school career-building website. Initially, I aimed for Mental Health Nursing, inspired by my mother's fulfilling career as a nurse. However, after further exploration, Occupational Therapy emerged as my true passion. I completed my general education at Macomb Community College and took an introductory course in Occupational Therapy, which confirmed my choice through a transformative observation at a local nursing home. My journey included overcoming ADHD and personal hardships, such as my recovery from a significant leg injury and caring for my mother during her battle with pancreatic cancer, may she rest in peace❤️. These experiences honed my skills in communication, problem-solving, and empathy, making me well-suited for this field. I have even been able to implement a lot of what I have learned for my newfoundland who will be 13 in a few weeks and has arthritis. I am prepared and eager to enter the work field as an occupational therapist, bringing with me the wealth of experience and the steadfast dedication to improving lives that we have learned throughout the program.

  • My name is Tina J. Randolph, and I am a wife, mother of two daughters. I have been in the healthcare field on and off since I was 19 years old. Caring for people is my passion and reason for breathing! My husband and I have been serving the community since 2016 by feeding, giving clothes, gift giveaways, holiday gifts, etc. Now, in my life, I feel I need to further my education and skills so I can do better for myself and family. My goal and hope are to represent my Late Great-Grandmother Rev. Margaret L. Wortham’s legacy who was also a nurse, pastor, and giver back to her community in Chester, PA. I am very grateful and ecstatic for receiving this year's 2024 Jean Griswold Foundation scholarship!

  • I grew up in El Paso, TX and moved to Dallas when I was 19.  Over the years, I’ve had jobs in the beauty industry, food and beverage service, as well as retail.  During which I cultivated long-term friendships and had many priceless experiences, yet nothing quite clicked as far as my job was concerned.  When a devastating loss left me wondering where I should go next, I returned to school. During Introduction to Physical Therapy, I had two amazing teachers who endowed me with new skills involving patient care.  After hearing me describe the things I was learning in school, a friend decided to tell this job recruiter about me.  She called me up asking if I wanted to work as a caregiver.  I was surprised by the offer but willing to give it a try.  And astoundingly I discovered it is the best job I’ve ever had!  Rather quickly, I was doing very well at something I enjoyed.  More importantly I felt like I am making a difference in people’s lives.

Receiving this scholarship will afford me the opportunity to work with a wider range of client types, with different needs, by becoming a licensed CNA.

  • Hello, my name is LaTonya Rogers. I am a wife, a mother of 7, and a grandma to more than 15 grandchildren. With this scholarship, and once I find my school of choice, I will get my CNA certification, and then I will get my LPN. Thanks again, Jean Griswold Foundation.

Winter 2023 Scholars: Bios

  • My name is Gracie Azevedo, from a young age, I have always been interested and gravitated toward Holistic Healing and Alternative Medicine. While working towards my Bachelors Degree in Holistic Health Sciences, I became a Behavior analyst for children with Autism, where I discovered how much I love working with people who’s brains don’t necessarily function the same way ours do. Soon after, I became a caregiver for my father, who suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury after having a heart attack. Taking on this role with my father has allowed me to combine my passion for caregiving and Alternative medicine, and I’m so grateful to have been awarded this scholarship so that I may can keep caregiving for my father, while continuing my education and looking to find a suitable career that will allow me to do both.

  • I’m a Junior at Sam Houston State University looking forward to getting into the nursing program this year. I’m a mother of 6 and just knowing the challenges along the way I’ve had to overcome allows me to finish off strong. This scholarship will allow me to have the opportunity to take a breath of fresh air. The overwhelming challenges faced financially often puts a halt to my focus on my studies. So having that freedom I’m so honored. This is the beginning of my journey in becoming a Doctor in Oncology. One step and one degree at a time.

  • I plan on using this scholarship to pay for my semester in school as I continue my pursuit towards my dream of becoming a Nurse. While there have been unimaginable challenges that have arisen during my mission I will not give up and only feel that much more motivated and inspired towards achieving my goal. My calling has always been to make a meaningful difference in people's lives, especially during one of their most difficult times. I intend on doing my part by collaborating and contributing towards a better outcome for each one of them.

  • Jenell has spent most of her working life in the retail industry. She truly enjoyed engaging with customers and brightening their day with her interactions. However, she felt a yearning for something more fulfilling. Jenell discovered that she had a genuine passion for helping others, particularly in providing care for her family members. By chance, she came across our job posting on Indeed, when we were in need of caregivers. Jenell wasted no time in applying, and we were thrilled to hire her on March 3rd. On the very same day, we provided her with Care Academy assignments to enhance her existing knowledge and skills. Jenell excelled in these modules and immediately began working with clients at triage level 1. As she gained more experience and confidence, Jenell became capable of serving any client we had. Her unwavering positive attitude and determination to continuously learn and improve bring a refreshing energy to our team. Recently, she made the decision to turn healthcare into a long-term career rather than just a job. However, there was a small hurdle she needed to overcome – completing her GED before being accepted into a CNA program. Once Jenell accomplishes this, there will be no stopping her!

  • I was born in the Philippines, and moved to the United States with my family back in 2010 when I was 8 years old. Ever since I was little, I have always been interested in the medical field, and in high school, I decided to go into the nursing field for my career. I grew up with my grandparents and helped take care of them for many years—driving my grandfather to his dialysis appointments and helping my grandmother bathe. I knew helping my grandparents in little ways brought smiles in their faces and made a small difference in their daily activities. To be frank, they are one of my inspirations in finishing my studies. I always remind myself the purpose of my grandfather bringing us to the U.S.— to have a better education. I owe it to my grandparents and the rest of my family to finish school and give them a better life that they

deserve. This scholarship will greatly help my parents financially to pay for my textbooks and other resources I need for nursing school like my uniform. And most importantly it will help me pursue my dreams.

  • My name is Juanna Elliott, I’ve been a caregiver for a while now since taking care of my mom. She was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia since I’ve been young and as I got older I’ve seen the pain that she had to endure, she’s been in and out of the hospital for years. Yes I’ve had multiple jobs, but being a caregiver was the best. I’ve had a couple of jobs being a caregiver and I knew I wanted to be more, that’s when CNA came to mind. I love meeting new people and taking care of them as well, I’ve been working with Griswold for 2 years now and I love being apart of they family.

  • Peggy Elms is a proud Mother of 2, Grandmother of 7, and semi-retired. She started caregiving 10 years ago. After completing medical assistance courses, she vowed to take care of everyone like they were her parents after being unable to care for her own at the time of their passing, 25 years ago. Peggy loves helping others and their families transition into a new phase of their lives with dignity and honor. Peggy has been recognized as a caregiver with a gift in loving her patients as if they were family. It is an honor to receive this scholarship to show you are never too young or old to learn and achieve new things.

Thank you for the privilege to represent you in my new adventure.

  • I have always put others before myself, I cared for my mommy until she passed, I cared for my uncle until he passed, i am caring for my auntie who is 102 years old, and working part time. I

always love caring for people, it's not easy but it's worth it, knowing I have made their last days happy.

This gift is nothing of myself, it's all to glorify God, because without Him I am nothing, with God I have strength to continue on no matter what.

This scholarship is a blessing and it is giving me an opportunity to further my education to become a CNA and to continue to go forward helping others.

Never give up on yourself, believe, have faith and trust God.

  • Caring for people in general and disadvantaged group in particular is both my calling and my profession. As a social worker, I spent most of my life working with people disadvantaged by age, gender, physical and mental disabilities, economic status and geographic locations in Africa. When I moved to the USA, home health care provided the opportunity to peruse my interest of serving others as well as a means of income. I work for Griswold Home Care in NoVA East as a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) providing direct patient care for elderly people since September 2016.

This scholarship (Medication Aide certificate), will broaden my scope of responsibility beyond a CNA to assist clients with self-administration of medications in a safe manner. I would be most helpful for the physically and mentally challenged individuals who encounter difficulty self-administering their medications. On a personal level, the certification will advance my career in the health care field.

  • I have been a caregiver for over ten years. I currently work as a hospice home health aide. I believe that end of life is as important as the beginning of life, and that every patient facing this difficult milestone should be treated with dignity and respect. I strive to provide excellent care to my patients and I am proud to be able to make a difference in people's lives.
